Free and independent media is a cornerstone of democracy. Since 1973, people have tuned their radios to WRFG 89.3 FM to hear the progressive news, information, and viewpoints they need in order to make well-informed decisions about issues that matter in their lives. And they also love the music – hand-picked by WRFG program hosts instead of pre-determined by some corporate office!
But, as a book title warns, “freedom is a constant struggle.” That is especially true in this age of increasing media consolidation and homogenization. A few big corporations buy up thousands of newspapers and TV and radio stations, impose standardized formats, and restrict the on-air news and views to ones that promote their corporate agenda. That is definitely not free or independent media.
Which is why WRFG is so important. Progressive. Independent. Community-based. These are the concepts that gave birth to WRFG 39 years ago and that still guide the station today. Proceeds from the 5K Freedom Run help WRFG to remain the indispensable outlet that so many diverse and progressive voices have come to rely on.
